"What will your verse be?" by Dead Poets Society

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute.

We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering - these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love - these are what we stay alive for.

To quote from Whitman, "Oh me, Oh life of the questions of these recurring. Of the endless trains of the faithless. Of cities filled with the foolish. What good amid these. Oh me, oh life"

Answer: that you are here. That life exists and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

What will your verse be?

시는 결코 아름다워서 읽고 쓰는 것이 아니야.

우리가 인류의 일원이기 때문이 시를 읽고 쓰는 것이지. 인류는 열정으로 가득 차 있어. 의학, 법률, 경제, 기술 따위는 삶을 유지하는데 필요하지만 시와 아름다움, 낭만, 사랑이야말로 삶의 진정한 목적이야.

휘트먼의 시를 인용하자면, "오, 나여! 오, 인생이여! 수없이 반복하는 의문들이여! 믿음없는 사람들의 행렬. 바보들로 가득차 있는 도시. 아름다움은 어디있단 말이오? 오, 나여! 오 생명이여!"

답은 한 가지. 바로 네가 여기 있다는 것. 생명이 존재하고 화려한 연극이 계속되고 너 또한 한 줄의 대사를 던지게 될 거라는 것. 너의 시는 어떤 것이 될까?

네가 말하게 될 그 한 줄의 대사는 과연 어떤 것일까?

반항심 가득하던 어린 시절, 

이 영화를 참 감명깊게 봤더랬다.

순간순간 울컥하며 눈물나는 장면들도 있었고.

명작 중의 명작이란 생각이 드는 영화.

지금 이 영화를 다시 본다면 어떤 느낌이 들까 궁금하다.

예전과 같은 메시지를 느끼며 공감하게 될지,

아니면 조금은 다른 메시지를 느끼게 될지.

나는 내 삶의 무대에서 어떤 연기를 하고 있나?

어떤 말들을 하며, 어떤 행동들을 하고 있나?

정말 하고 싶은 대사는, 나만의 시는 무엇일까?

이 영화 다시 보며, 생각해 봐야겠다.
